From 1955, the German Reichsbahn GDR developed the V 60 diesel-hydraulic locomotive for medium-heavy shunting service. These machines were primarily intended to end the inefficient use of steam locomotives in shunting service. Between 1962 and 1964, LKM Babelsberg delivered the first series with 163 locomotives to the DR. During the construction of the first main row, a rain cover was even installed on the side windows. As a result of new service regulations, DR shunting locomotives were gradually painted orange-yellow during revisions.
