The 115 series is a variant of the 110 series. The 110 series was developed as a general-purpose locomotive for passenger and freight train services on main and secondary lines for the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the GDR. In order to haul heavier trains, more powerful 1,100 kW (1,500 hp) engines were installed in some locomotives. These locomotives were re-designated as series 115. A little later they were combined in series 114. The series designation 115 should remain free for the planned new locomotives.
