After the class V 100 locomotive served as a test machine for a long time, it was put into series production from 1961/62. It was used for mixed operation on non-electrified lines and for light traffic on main lines. With an output of 1,100 hp (810 kW), it was allowed to drive at a maximum speed of 110 km/h. In 1968, the locomotives were re-designated as class 211.
