To speed up the change in traction, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) purchased a total of 378 V 200 (later BR 120) locomotives from the Soviet Union between 1966 and 1975. Due to the fact that the locomotives did not have a train heater from the factory, they were mainly used in freight transport. Due to the loud noise of the engine, the name "Taigatrommel" quickly became common for locomotives.
