In order to replace the costly and labor-intensive steam locomotives in shunting service, the Austrian Federal Railways purchased a number of Class 2062 diesel locomotives. The Jenbacher plant in Tyrol produced a total of 65 of these two-axle small diesel locomotives by 1966.
Thanks to the eye-catching cast iron faceplates that serve as ballast weights, the locomotive was used in shunting and construction train traffic throughout Austria. On the Lower Austrian branch lines, these locomotives were located in front of passenger trains with one or two cars. The last locomotives were taken out of regular service in 2003. However, some units still serve today as factory and construction train locomotives with serial designation X262.
