Přehlídkovou linií třídy 2D2 9100 byla „Ligne Impériale“ – císařská linie, která spojovala francouzské hlavní město Paříž s Lyonem a Marseille na pobřeží Středozemního moře. S maximální rychlostí 140 kilometrů za hodinu a tažnou silou 900 tun byly lokomotivy perfektní pro tažení rychlíků. SNCF objednalo první sérii 35 lokomotiv v roce 1950. Počet lokomotiv 2D2 9100 se měl v průběhu let zvýšit na 100. Přestože její silueta působila poměrně moderně, technika této lokomotivy byla z 20. let minulého století. Proto byly lokomotivy brzy nahrazeny modernějšími lokomotivami řady CC 7100. Menší a lehčí motory nahradily motor Buchli, který byl drahý a náročný na údržbu a používal se pro lokomotivy 2D2 9100. Přesto byly lokomotivy řady 2D2 9100 používány až do 80. let.
